Meditation for Business
Employees in the U.K work in a constantly spiralling atmosphere of information overload, which is now recognised as a medical condition. Life is changing more rapidly than ever before and we must sink or swim.
Computers serve as a good analogy to our dilemma. Like them, we are increasingly expected to work faster and perform more complex tasks. Computers are machines. We are not. For us, information overload leads to confusion and ineffectiveness and is the harbinger of many resulting stress problems.
An extensive list of such problems is not necessary. Let’s just recognise that many of the prevailing difficulties in our working environment have their roots in pressures of work or domestic/social issues.
Where does meditation come into all this? It’s a release. It can produce a very deep state of mental and physical relaxation, easing away accumulated tension and tiredness. More importantly, the after effects are often an increased mental clarity, which leads to greater efficiency at work. An example of how it can work:
Think of a work problem that’s been bugging you. One of the best solutions is often to temporarily walk away from it. Do something else. In doing so you may have an intuitive realisation of a solution when you haven’t even been thinking of the problem. A similar experience will sometimes result from meditating. Your attention drifts into a settled state where everyday thoughts are transcended. Problem solving comes more easily as the calmness of meditation filters into activity.
There are many prominent business leaders who use meditation as a personal tool to stay on top of things. Many businesses now encourage their work force to consider such techniques. The image of meditation is still an issue, but things have moved on significantly and the Internet is helping. You’re using it now and it is hopefully guiding you towards a more realistic perception of what meditation can do.
